About Twinary Rugs

Hi, I’m Lydia.

I’ve been twining rag rugs for over a decade, ever since my mom gifted me my first loom. She’s a weaver too, so you could say it runs in the family. I love the beauty and functionality of this sustainable craft. My early rugs were experiments in color and texture, upcycling fabrics from thrift-store sheets and outgrown clothes.

After years of color exploration and basic stripes, I wanted to try my hand at more complex designs. I charted a pattern based on a woven blanket that lives on an armchair next to my loom and was honestly stunned at how well it turned out as a rug design. What started with one pattern just grew and grew, until I had a vast library of designs just begging to be shared. And that’s how the Twinary Rugs Community was born.

The name Twinary Rugs is a play on “binary” because of the two-color foundation to this system of patterns I have created. All the patterns in this series are created with only two alternating colors. The magic is in how the stitches are thoughtfully pitched and placed to create stunning designs that look complicated but are actually rather simple to follow, with easy-to-read charts and detailed instructions.

Above is the Arrowhead design, available soon in the pattern shop.
